Verdicts — a design that states whether it holds

A worksheet is not finished when it has computed a number. It is finished when it says whether the number is acceptable, and against what. That last step is usually the point of the document: a section is adequate, a bolt is not, a temperature rise is within what the datasheet allows.

check states a condition and reports a verdict on it. It binds nothing and nothing reads it — it exists to be read by a person, and counted by whatever runs the worksheet.

A bracket in bending

unit kip = 1000⁢lbf
M=4.2⁢kip·in
S=0.42⁢in3
Fy=36⁢ksi

The allowable stress, and the stress that is actually there.

σallow=0.6·Fy=0.6·36⁢ksi=148927000⁢Pa
σ=MS=474.536⁢J6.88257×10−6⁢m3=68947600⁢Pa
σ=10⁢ksi
σallow=21.6⁢ksi
checkσ≤σallow=68947600⁢Pa≤148927000⁢Papass

Deflection, against a span/360 limit

L=48⁢in
δ=0.09⁢in
δallow=L360=48⁢in360=0.00338667⁢m
δallow=0.133333⁢in
checkδ≤δallow=0.09⁢in≤0.00338667⁢mpass

A check may be any condition, not only a comparison

Both of these have to hold, and one statement says so.

t=0.25⁢in
tmin=0.1875⁢in
checkt≥tminandδ≤δallow=0.25⁢in≥0.1875⁢inand0.09⁢in≤0.00338667⁢mpass

A verdict that does not hold

Nothing here is wrong: the arithmetic is right and the design is not. The worksheet still evaluates, nomo check still reports it as a worksheet that works, and the exit code says a check failed rather than that the sheet did.
